Purpose

 1.     To proclaim the Word of God and the truths of the Catholic Faith to God’s children.

2.      To create a loving, positive, and fun  learning environment for the students in a classroom setting to grow in their Roman Catholic Faith and foster their relationship with God and the Church community.

3.     To encourage personal and spiritual growth among team members and students.

 Responsibilities

 1. Become familiar with the curriculum for your age group and the ecclesial method.

2. Go over and know the content for each lesson before you present it.

3. Prepare a Sacred Space for each class.

4. Be in frequent contact with the Coordinator and other Catechists, especially regarding additional materials needed for class and the teaching schedule.

5. Finding a substitute and informing the Coordinator if you are unable to make it to a class.  If you are unable to find a substitute please inform the Coordinator.

6. Pray for your fellow Catechists, students, and their families.

 Time Commitment: 2.5 hours weekly; 60 hours yearly (24 weeks a year)

 Length of Commitment:  Minimum of one year

 Weekly Duties

First, Third, and Fifth grade classes are Tuesday 5:30pm to 6:45pm;
second and fourth grade classes are Wednesday 5:30pm to 6:45pm. 

1. Spend time in prayer and review the curriculum for the coming week and prepare for lessons early.

2. Day of Class:

* Arrive a minimum of 15 minutes prior to class (Catechist are encouraged to arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of class.)

                *  Set up Sacred Space

                *  Make sure you have all the materials necessary for conducting class.

                *  Set up for any activities in the lesson.

                *  Greet students at the door before class begins.

                *  Clean up and put away all material (including Sacred Space).

                *  Notify the Coordinator of any needs for materials, additional curriculum,  etc.

 Requirements

1. Must be a fully initiated member of the Catholic Church (Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation).

2. Participate faithfully in the sacramental life of the Church.

3. Lead a life that is doctrinally and morally consistent with the person of Jesus and the teachings of the Church (ex. Married person’s marriage must be recognized in the Catholic Church).

5. Attend catechist training workshop at Our Lady of Mount Carmel and be in the process of catechist certification within the Diocese of San Diego, completion of the online Symbolon  program, or demonstration of faith

6. Interact well with others and desire to be a contributing member of the Faith Formation program.

7. Be acquainted with the developmental abilities of the children you will be working with.

8. Acquaint yourself with the expectations of, benefits to, and Faith Formation Program commitments.

9. Must have a good knowledge of the tenets of the Catholic faith.

10.  Will meet with the Director of the Elementary Faith Formation program for a 30 minute Meet at the beginning of the year.

11. Complete the Safe Environment training as required by the diocese of San Diego.
